How to make money decluttering

Decluttering your home can not only help you create a more organised and pleasant living space but also provide opportunities to make some money. Here are several ways to make money while decluttering:

Sell Items Online:

  • eBay: List items on eBay that are in good condition and have value.
  • Facebook Marketplace: Sell locally to avoid shipping costs. This is a great way to sell items if you want to get rid of them fast.
  • Poshmark/Depop: If you have gently used clothing, shoes, or accessories, consider selling them on Poshmark or Depop.

Host a Garage Sale:

  • Organise a garage sale to sell items you no longer need. Work with neighbours or friends to make it a more significant event. Advertise it locally to attract more buyers.

Trade-In or Sell Electronics:

  • Check if there are electronic devices or gadgets you can sell or trade-in. You can trade in old devices at Office Works or The Good Guys and receive a gift card. To receive cash instead, you can sell them to CashConverters.

Consignment Stores:

  • Some consignment shops will sell your items and give you a percentage of the profit. There are many ways to sell through consignment. Places in your area may have 'Rent A Rack', or you can even send your items to an online seller.

Donate for Tax Deductions:

  • If you donate items to a qualifying charitable organisation, you may be eligible for a tax deduction. Be sure to keep receipts and check the tax regulations in your area.

Book Reselling:

  • Look for books you no longer need and sell them on platforms like Amazon, BookFinder, or specialised book reselling sites.

Recycle Scrap Metal:

  • If you have old appliances, tools, or other items made of metal, you may be able to sell them to a scrap yard.

Participate in Clothing Swaps:

  • Organise or attend a clothing swap event where people exchange clothing items. It's a great way to get new items without spending money.

Remember to thoroughly clean and, if necessary, repair items before selling or donating. Additionally, be mindful of any legal or safety considerations, especially when selling items like electronics. Always prioritise safety and privacy when meeting buyers or arranging transactions.
